THE STUART HALL PROJECT
Dir. John Akomfrah, 2013, UK, 98min

A founding figure of cultural studies, Stuart Hall’s resounding and ongoing influence on British intellectual life commenced soon after he emigrated from Jamaica in 1951. Combining extensive archival imagery – television excerpts, home movies, family photos – with specially filmed material and a personally mixed Miles Davis soundtrack, Akomfrah’s filmmaking approach matches the agility of Hall’s intellect, its intimate play with memory, identity and scholarly impulse traversing the changing historical landscape of the second half of the 20th Century.

Special Afrobeat Diggin

Rainer Horner aka DJ Hooray had his first contact with Hip Hop in the mid-90s and from this moment on he was not only fascinated by the music but by the whole Hip Hop culture. Well known for his mixtapes, his record collection grew bigger and bigger, adding genres like jazz, soul, funk or even more extraordinary music like German Christ funk or African highlife. Up to this day he is strictly playing vinyl.
At the opening night of „Afropea Now!“ you can expect to hear a musical journey through Africa with a set of classic afrobeat tunes, some Ethiopian jazz and of course lots of West African highlife music.
